₪₪₪ amending tax return on tax reimbursement that were paid back to employer?
Hello, I asked other tuition reimbursement questions at this forum, and I’m interested in getting more details.
I understand that I can amend tax returns for the past 3 years using form 1040X, if I make an error on the original tax return, etc. I’m wondering if the tax credit on the tuition/fees that were paid in one year (let’s say 2009) that were reimbursed by the employer (in 2009) can be obtained at a later time (let’s say 2011) through filing 1040X, if I leave the employer before the required period to stay with them was up and the reimbursed amount had to be paid back to the company (let’s say in 2011). I hate to miss out on both the tuition reimbursement (which I will lose if I leave the company in 2011) and tax credit on tuition/fees (which I would have received if I didn’t receive tuition reimbursement in 2009).
I am wondering if the reimbursement will be reflected in w-2 or some income document that will be submitted to IRS for the year that I paid tuition/fees(2009), so IRS will be aware that I received reimbursement in that year (2009). Just because I had to pay that back at a later year when I leave the company (2011), would I be able to amend the tax return for the earlier year (2009), when I paid tuition/fees?
I hope above is clear. Thank you for your input.
