₪₪₪ Can I transfer tax liens to another person?
When I was 17 my grandmother asked me to sign as the official applicant to a vendor business she wanted to start for herself. She couldn’t apply because if she did it would be the end of her Social Security check. (I am aware that this is considered fraud now, but as a 17 year old girl I did not know anything then!) I agreed and I continued to sign her business paperwork for the state tax department for several years until I opted to stop. Now I am married with two children and we cannot buy a house because my grandmother failed to report the business on her taxes for an entire year and the state IRS says I owe them over $10,000! Even though this was in my name, I never profited from this business. My credit is ruined until this is resolved and we do not have $10,000 to throw around. Asking my grandmother to pay the money herself is not an option; she doesn’t have a lot of money as it is. Is there any way to transfer this debt to my grandmother’s name? She is willing to do this as it is her responsibility, but we don’t know if it can be done and I can’t find any information online.
Please do not leave comments that are not helpful or are condescending in nature. I am well aware that the debt is legally mine. I believe I made that clear. My issue is that I never profited from this business and my grandmother was responsible for reporting it. Until I was 23 my parents were still claiming me on their taxes even though I was living on my own from age 18. Basically I didn’t know enough about the real world when I was younger although I was certainly living in it and my entire family used me and jerked me around and now I am paying for their mistakes…as usual. I was naive and I wised up too late. I get it, but EVERYONE…even YOU people…makes mistakes in their youth. So if you don’t have anything constructive to say, don’t comment. I don’t leave ugly unkind things on anyone else’s questions, no matter how inane they may be. I would appreciate the same courtesy.
