How can I reduce these back school taxes ?

I live in southwest Ohio & the stae claims I owe them $2000 in back school taxes, it’s in my county’s courthouse in small claims & everything. Nontheless I do have on paper the real amounts I owe from those three years. $181, $92, & $164. is there a way at all that I can have those penalties & fees lowered & just pay these balances ?

first contact a lawyer because it more involved especially you dealing with the court

My first question to you is–Have you submitted the outstanding returns?

If yes, then your account should be updated by the school district section of the ohio dept of taxation. Once that is completed then you can ask them to waive the penalties. The interest is the part that does not get waived, so you will owe the balances due plus interest. If I were you I would pay the balances due immediately and wait for a billing on the interest. Just try working with them or hire an accountant (usually cheaper than a lawyer). You don’t necessarily need a lawyer to fight through this mess.

Now, if they have got the courts to levy you then you probably need a tax lawyer to fight the dept of taxation on your behalf (it sounds like they are just getting to that point–submit returns in person if necessary on Morse Rd.–this should stop the process of the court case–then work from the above advice). In other words, try dealing with them yourself or with the help of a good tax guy and see if you can resolve this before shelling out lots of money for a lawyer to get you a similar solution as I mentioned above.
