How fair is it to have IRS “settling” overdue tax bills????
I have know those who owe significant amounts of taxes for past years unfiled returns (tens of thousands of dollars). They have settlement conferences and settle for cents on the dollar and start over. Isn’t their short payments coming out of the pockets of all the rest of us Americans who routinely pay all our taxes due??? What kind of justice is that – guess we should all stop paying taxes and just settle when the time is right?????

Not everyone gets a settlement like that, it all depends upon who you are dealing with at the IRS. I used to live with a lady who worked for the IRS in this capacity. Many people can and do go to prison for not paying their taxes…just look at that Survivor guy. He didn’t get cents on the dollar.
As for the settlements, all I can say is at least they’re having to pay something. Something, IMO, is better than nothing. I’m not sure if “waiting until the time is right” is a good strategy either. More often than not I get a refund, so it’d be silly to get myself in legal trouble for nothing. The only taxes I usually end up paying are state. I’ve never had any problems with federal.
The people who get that type of settlements are typically people who have no assets that can be siezed, and no likelihood of ever paying back all that they owe. It’s not as easy or as likely as the ads on TV make it look.
I agree it’s not “fair”. Fair and Legal are NOT the same thing.
Maybe, since it’s our tax dollars, we should all get a vote on it.
Hell, the IRS guy could come here to yahoo answers and explain his side, and the deadbeat taxpayor could plead their side, and we’d vote to settle or stick it to em.
