How long till the irs pays the doe?
I owed the department of education. The irs took some of my tax refund to pay it. Well I filed my taxes on april 14. The doe still has not received payment. How long till they receive it, and is there a way I can speed this up?
I filed electronically
I have already received my refund, but the doe has not received their money. I need to apply for financial aid, and cannot do it till the doe recieves the money.

How did you file? E-file is faster. Since you waited until the last minute, it’s going to take longer…longer still if you filed through the postal service rather than e-filing over the computer.
When this happened to me, I believe it was about one month before the D.O.E. received a payment. Then it was another week or two before I got what was left back.
When the IRS finishes processing your return they will release the refund to FMS. FMS then checks for an offset flag. If there is no offset flag, they send you your refund either by direct deposit or paper check. If there is an offset, they contact the agency that placed the offset flag and ask for verification of the debt and the amount. The agency typically has 30 days to respond. (If they don’t respond in the time allotted, you get your refund.) FMS then cuts payment to the agency and sends you whatever is left over, if anything.
There’s nothing that you can do to expedite the process.
