    You’ll need to file separately in order to save him from becoming responsible for your tax debt. You’ll lose the benefit of joint filing, but that’s often a smaller price to pay for taxpayers with large individual tax debts who enter into marriage.

    The IRS will penalize your joint tax return, and if you don’t pay they can and sometimes do take his return if you file married filing separately.
