IRS Adjustments – can the IRS make adjustments to a previous year return without informing you?

My husband received a letter from the State of Maryland stating “we received info from IRS indicating that adjustments were made to your fed income tax return for 2006″. We made no adjustments to his 2006 Fed Return. Can the IRS make adjustments and not tell you? We never received notice of this from the IRS? Or is Maryland just not know what they are talking about?

  1. Judy says:

The IRS notifies you if they make adjustments.

  2. card-ron says:

If the IRS has made an adjustment to your federal income tax return, they will attempt to inform you and either ask for more money or issue you an additional refund. It is possible MD was informed before the IRS notification got to you. If you haven’t moved recently, wait a couple of weeks for an IRS notification. If you don’t receive something in the next couple of weeks, contact the IRS and see what’s going on.

    Did you move?

The IRS sends letters out, but if they don’t hear back from you, they make the change anyway. Wait until after next thursday and call and ask.
