Should Cannabis Be Legalized
Marijuana has been used since ancient times, as one of the oldest plants on earth it was first cultivated over 10,000 years ago. Marijuana, although illegal is still widely used today, and many states would like to legalize marijuana, much like alcohol. California legislators, recently proposed a bill that would legalize marijuana, and if passed, there is a good chance that many states will follow. Even though using marijuana has proven medical benefits, and would generate a large amount of revenue for different states, marijuana should not be legalized, because of the short and long-term affects it can have on the body.
Many people would like to legalize marijuana because of the medical benefits associated with the drug. Some studies show that smoking marijuana is an effective way of helping terminally ill patients deal with the pain or give them temporary relieve of the symptoms associated with their illness. In fact, Lynn Zimmer states, “A friend of mine allows his teenage son to smoke marijuana. The boy gets intense nausea from the chemotherapy for his cancer, and marijuana works better than the medications prescribed by his physician.” Equally important marijuana has benefited patients dealing with Aids, glaucoma, multiple-sclerosis, and other life threatening illness. Many believe the legalization of marijuana gives terminally ill patients an option away from the typical over the count prescriptions. Lynn Zimmer and John Morgan states “the only clear health risk associated with marijuana is respiratory damage, and this risk is confined to long-term, heavy marijuana smokers.” Under federal law marijuana is considered a crime and unless federal laws change marijuana will continue to be illegal.
The debate over the legalization of marijuana has change position over the years, and has recently made headlines again with the state of California proposing a bill that will legalize marijuana in their state. Although, studies have shown that marijuana can have medical benefits for the terminally ill; when compared to the short and long term affects is it really worth legalizing? When smoked marijuana begins to effect users almost immediately and can last for one to three hours. Some immediate physical effects of marijuana include a distorted perception, faster heartbeat and pulse rate, bloodshot eyes, dry mouth and throat. Those that oppose the legalization of marijuana fear the fact that many people are mislead into believing marijuana has no major side effects. George Biernson explains “marijuana damages the brain, the chromosomes, and the immune and reproductive systems.” Smoking marijuana, frequently, can also cause burning and stinging of the mouth and throat, and cause heavy coughing. Many fear that smoking marijuana will increase lung cancer in our youth.
As many states continues to debate over the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes, some states battle for the use of marijuana for recreational purposes in order to capitalize on taxed revenue.. California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger implied “I think it’s time for a debate.” “I think all of those ideas of creating extra revenues; I’m always open for an open debate on it. If passed, California will become the first state to legalize marijuana and impose a tax, which will help their current financial crisis. Supporters say sales tax from marijuana would rake in at least $1 billion in revenue for the state, and help the state pull out of their current financial crisis. A field poll earlier this year found that 56 percent of the state’s registered voter support legalizing marijuana.
At what cost are we as a nation willing to sell our souls, for a quick high, a dollar or two. Although, marijuana has medical benefits, and can help different states with their financial needs, Marijuana should not be legalized; the effect is too great a risk. To legalize a drug in one state, because of a financial need is sending the wrong message to our youth. There is already an epidemic of teenagers smoking cigarettes, what happens if marijuana is legalized; it would seem like throwing gasoline on a fire. Marijuana is a drug that can cause irreversible affects on the body, and if legalize I feel the outcome will be much like cigarettes and alcohol. Legalizing marijuana is not the answer to our nation’s problems.
