What do you do if you have a Tax Lien and knew nothing about it and don’t know why you have it?

I have a tax lien filed in 08 against me in the state of california for 55,000 dollars. I’ve lived in Missouri since 07. I don’t know why i would have a tax lien, and if I did, the amount of 55,000 is more then I have ever made in a year or even 2 years. I don’t understand and I am afraid to call the IRS. What do I do????????

Quaking in your boots won’t accomplish anything.
CALL the IRS or CA and find out about the lien
Is it federal or stat tax lien or what?
If it is in error, you can start steps to remove it
    Knowledge is power

Did you ever live in California?

    Call the Franchise Tax Board.

Is this a federal tax lien? If so, and you did live in California, it was filed in that state if that’s the address of record the IRS has. Don’t be afraid to call about it. They don’t (usually) bite. At least, I didnt when I was a collection rep for the IRS :)

If you file your tax returns every year and usually receive a refund, it’s quite likely this is an error. On the other hand, if you don’t file it’s possible the IRS filed for you many years ago and the balance could easily ballon very high with interest and penalties.
