Why would a garnishment be placed on an account where someone doesn’t have an account at?
My mother has two judgements against her. One is going after her wages. The second doesn’t know where she works. Today we got a notice from the Sherrif stating that a levy had been placed on a local bank via a general garnishement. She doesn’t have an account there at all. She used to have a credit card which is no longer open and was closed out. I however have an account there and deposited one of her paychecks for her a while back. Why would they put a levy at a bank that she doesn’t have an account at? They can’t touch my money legally because she’s not a signer on the account and none of her checks are getting deposited in my account. The one did but that was before the garnishment levy was issued. She get’s her checks cashed at a check cashing place right now.
Why would they do this? It seems like they are fishing for my mothers bank account which she doesn’t have one at all.

It sounds like someone in her payroll department or whoever reconciles the work checking account gave protected information and should be reported. The most likely reason there was a garnishment at YOUR bank is because you deposited the check there. When it cleared the bank, the person simply looked on the back of the check to determine where it was deposited. Thinking it was your mom’s account, that’s where the creditor sent the garnishment!
I don’t know what state you live in, but this is usually protected information under many privacy acts punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment
