Will the IRS intercept your tax refund if you owe back property taxes?

If we owe back property taxes for 2007 will our refund from the IRS be taken this year to help pay for the back taxes? Any info would be appreciated!!! Thank you.

I would say no. Property taxes are owed to your county, not the Federal Government. My husband and I got behind on our property taxes back in 96, and we received letters from our county tax collector, mortgage company and a very nice (cough) lawyer for the mortgage company, but never heard from the IRS. We filed our Federal taxes like always and got our refund as usual. Your State refund, if you file state returns, may get offset, so you may want to check into that with them, but I wouldn’t worry about your Federal refund.

No. Property taxes are owed by the property not the owner. If the owner doesn’t voluntarily pay, eventually the property can be sold. These taxes take priority over all other debts against the property.
